How Safe is Acupuncture?
What Causes an Imbalance?
What does it feel like?
Acupuncture is an ancient form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system.
Practitioners of acupuncture have used a variety of medical systems to diagnose and help millions of people
get well and stay healthy.

Your doctor will stimulate specific points on the body with either an electrical current, a fine, sterile needle, laser
light, or mechanical pressure.  This stimulation sends signals, or a specific set of instructions to the brain.  In
turn the brain tells the body what to do – thus promoting natural healing by enhancing recuperative power,
immunity and  physical and emotional health.  It also can improve overall function and well-being.  It is a safe,
painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

These points follow specific pathways called meridian or channels.  There are 14 main channels throughout the
body and each channel is connected to specific organs and glands.  The points on these channels
communicate with the glands, organs, and brain via wireless signals much like your cell phone or a satellite
signal.  If your signal is interrupted / disturbed, the signal gets distorted.  These distortions can lead to health
problems, and thus the goal of the doctor is to remove any disruption and reset the system for proper
communication.
Extremely - when preformed by a doctor or licensed
acupuncturist.  It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy.
There is little danger of infection from acupuncture
needles because they are sterile, used only once, and
then discarded.  On occasion you may bleed a very small
amount where the needle was removed, and on rare
occasions you may develop a bruise where the needle
was inserted.
Many things can interfere with your body’s wireless lack of
exercise, scars, accidents, or local inflammation - as well as
other things like seasonal changes and diet.

wireless communication systems, returning the body to a
balanced state of health, but when repetitive or long standing
stress on your meridians persists, the system becomes
damaged – thus creating a weakened state, then illness, pain,
or disease.

If we use the light switch analogy - imagine the light bulb turning
on and off as your meridian turning on and off.  While the light
may be in the ceiling, the switch is on the wall.  Any disruption in
either the flow of electricity to the switch or to the bulb will cause
the light not to work, or to work incorrectly.  So to, anything that
alters the flow of energy from a meridian or to a meridian can
alter its function.
The needles are very thin, no thicker than a human hair.  Some people feel a little prick as the needle is inserted, but most
don’t feel anything. The sensation experienced can be different from person to person and from point to point.  Some people
experience a sensation of energy spreading and moving around the needle. Other sensations are commonly described as a
vague numbness, heaviness, tingling or dull ache.  All of these reactions are good and a sign that the treatment is working.
If you ever experience pain beyond the initial insertion, let the doctor know and the needle can be removed and replaced.
There are different styles of acupuncture based on the
treating method style, location of treatment points, and
chronicity of a condition.  Many needles go no deeper
than a mosquito bite, just under the skin – no more than
1/16th of an inch.  In larger muscle areas, like the
buttock, the needle may enter a little further.  And when
trying to reach a high state of qui - the needles may go
as deep as 1/4 to 1/2 an inch or deeper. But as always
- let your doctor know if you have concerns or fears.
How Do You Know Where to Treat?
There are several methods for choosing which points to treat. The
three main methods of choosing a point for treatment are1.) At the
location of pain, 2.) Standard published protocols depending on the
health issues, 3.) Based on diagnostic tests such as pulse points,
Applied Kinesiology reflex testing, or Electro-Meridian Imaging. The
these evaluation methods.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Will Acupuncture Work for Me?
The number of treatments required varies from person to person.  Factors such as how long you have had the problem, the
severity of the problem, your age, and your healing potential, all play a role in determining the number of treatments
required. For some, the benefits of acupuncture are felt immediately and permanently.  Acupuncture is best used with a
series of six to twelve visits and then a re-evaluation.  If you are looking for lasting results, anticipate making a commitment
of a few months.  Health and healing are gained through persistence and commitment.

As in any therapy, there is no guarantee. Through diagnostic evaluation, the doctor can help assess the integrity of your
meridians and discuss the potential benefits. Don’t wait –  schedule your assessment today.
